Kilifi County is a county of Kenya. It was formed in 2010 as a result of the merge of the Kilifi District and Malindi District. Its capital is Kilifi and its largest town is Malindi. The county has a population of 1,109,735. Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay at the mouth of the Galana River, lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is 120 kilometers northeast of Mombasa. Malindi is a tourist favorite location and very beautiful scenic landscapes, shoreline, beaches, and sea life. They claim that they cannot farm hence rely on fishing and tourism for daily living.  The main source of light is kerosene, sometimes replaced by firewood and candles. For cooking the households almost exclusively use charcoal and firewood (hence a high rate of deforestation in the area). The price of kerosene is high.

The lack of access to light is quoted by the parents and teachers as one of the biggest hindrances in student performance and it’s very hard to study at home, so they study only at school during the day.

In April 2019, GIVEWATTS received funding for an additional 100 solar lamps and 100 clean cookstoves to support plans to broaden our impact to more communities in Malindi. In December of 2019, Ellevio further funded an additional 100 solar lamps and 100 cookstoves to the same region.

GIVEWATTS process has been developed into a cycle where the initial funding starts the distribution wheel. Our aim is to keep a balance between business efficiency and impact.
