GIVEWATTS continues to distribute climate-smart and clean energy solutions to vulnerable communities in Kenya, for the moment at a somewhat slower and more restricted pace.
With COVID-19 all around the world, also in Kenya, times are uncertain, with ripple effects on health, education, economy, and overall development. The economy in any developing country is extra vulnerable to when borders close and exports are halted. We also know that distribution in rural Africa is never easy. For this reason, GIVEWATTS has built a well-oiled machine to get things out and reach the rural customer base regardless. We are set up to deal with the uncertainty and fluctuations that can come from an external shock like a drought, a flood, or a pandemic.
Health and safety for both GIVEWATTS staff and rural households are always a top priority. Our distribution of clean energy solutions to rural households continues, with some changes. We do it with gloves, masks, and hand sanitizers, and follow all recommendations and directives from authorities. Schools are closed so we are finding new creative ways to engage with current and potential customers. The offer itself is ever so relevant to a household living without access to electricity. A solar lamp and energy-efficient stoves save money (even more important when people are losing income), reduce respiratory issues (less indoor smoke), and offer an opportunity for kids to study at home after dark and feel a bit safer. Clean energy solutions make households more resilient to external shocks.
GIVEWATTS is now extending its reach, using its distribution model, to increase impact and bring more relief and take measures towards helping people to protect themselves from the spread of COVID-19. To that effect, we are adding complimentary soap bars and fliers with our products to spread awareness on how they can protect themselves and their communities. We are also sending out text messages with information to all our past and present customers with the same. As an extra measure geared towards staying safe and minimizing hand contact, there is now a 5% discount for customers who make their installment payments using the mobile payment system, Mpesa.
GIVEWATTS continues to distribute climate-smart and clean energy solutions to vulnerable communities in Kenya, for the moment at a somewhat slower and more restricted pace. Our distribution capacity remains mostly intact, and we are leveraging it now to also get sanitary products out to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and provide some relief. Please let us know if you want to look into how you can help our efforts in that space more.
